The increasing promotion of homebuyer education by organizations like Mortgage Guaranty Insurance Corporation (MGIC), Fannie Mae, Freddie Mac, the Neighborhood Reinvestment Corporation (NRC), and several of the nation's leading mortgage lenders, coupled with the recent formation of the American Homeowner Education and Counseling Institute (AHECI), has shined a spotlight on the need to prepare homebuyers for long-term homeownership.
Specifically, the mortgage industry is now engaged in a concerted effort, spearheaded by AHECI, to determine the effectiveness of homebuyer education as a hedge against the increased credit risk posed by mortgages underwritten with expanded guidelines.
AHECI was established in 1996 to elevate the importance of prepurchase homebuyer education and counseling.
