Informed industry sources indicate that Lockheed Martin Naval Electronics and Sensor Systems (Syracuse, NY) plans to continue the final stages of development for the cancelled AIEWS program over the next six months using some $15 million of its own funds.
The AIEWS had been slated for installation aboard over 140 Navy vessels, including Arleigh Burke-class destroyers, Ticonderoga-class cruisers, Enterprise-class aircraft carriers, San Antonio- and Wasp-class amphibious ships and the developmental DDX destroyer.
Foremost among these is perhaps its Advanced Integrated EW System (AIEWS), which is slated to replace the venerable AN/SLQ-32 onboard over 140 US Navy vessels.
The AIEWS program has a checkered history, with slipping schedules and threats of cancellation amid successful design reviews.
Another interesting element of AIEWS Increment 2 is a capability for countering missiles with IR and electro-optical (EO) seekers.
According to Denny Adams, SHIELDS program manager, the first three years of the program are primarily the risk-reduction effort, to develop long-lead technology required for AIEWS Increment 2, including the mid-wave lasers, but also new sensor technology, the laser rangefinder, and some processing capabilities.
The AIEWS has two modes of training that an operator may select: additive or substitutive.
The AIEWS will replace the AN/SLO-32( V), the AN/WLR- I H(V) and the AN/SSO-82(V) aboard a variety of US Navy ships, and the DD-2 I land-attack destroyer is also slated to receive the systmes (see "DD-21 Blue and Gold Teams Sprint for the Green." JED, May 2001, p.
Lockheed Martin, teamed with Litton Advanced Systems (now part of Northrop Grumman) and SenSyTech (Newington, VA), is under contract to develop three engineering development models (EDMs) of the Increment-I AIEWS. According to Lockheed Martin's EW director Peter Costello, hardware for the first two EDMs is complete, with the third to be finished up this fall.

Under government contract to the Navy's Theater Air Defense Program Office, DSR is supporting open-system-architecture design and prototyping activities for AIEWS risk reduction.
