14 ( ANI ): With a vision to improve road safety and reduce road traffic fatalities in Gurugram, Haryana, Anheuser-Busch InBev (AB InBev), UNITAR, CRRI, AIMTC, SRF, IRSC, DLF and OLA Cabs today announced the launch of the #SaferRoadsForGurugram initiative.
Echoing the sentiment of commitment towards the initiative, S K Mittal, President, All India Motor Transport Congress, said, "In alignment with its aims, AIMTC extends its commitment to this campaign to reach-out to the truckers and tour bus operators, who form an integral part of this stakeholder spectrum.
The AIMTC said in a statement the indirect tax regime had led to forced registration and unnecessary compliance by transporters and this needed to be done away with.
The two day token strike called by AIMTC and supported by all its constituent members was successful on day one with about 70 to 80 per cent of business shut down across the country.
AIMTC claims that whole transport industry is hit by high input costs and deep recession resulting in huge economic viability gap.
AIMTC said the cumulative loss to the truckers in four days was estimated at about ` 6,000 crore while the loss to the government could be more than ` 40,000 crore.
Lohara further said the AIMTC had sought information from the Union Surface Transport Ministry about the daily collections of toll taxes at various national highways.
The AIMTC meeting demanded the Centre to immediately roll-back hike in fuel prices, especially that of diesel, which rose by over Rs 2.
Another AIMTC member from Mumbai, Bal Malkit Singh said: " It is amply clear that the concessionaire recovers more than its investment within four years even under conservative estimates, yet the government chooses to award the contract for whopping 21 years.
He said that most of the grievances of the transporters had been addressed in July last year during detailed deliberations with the AIMTC.
The AIMTC, which represents around six million trucks across the country, called for an indefinite strike since Monday.
Tens of thousands of truckers have been off the roads after talks between the AIMTC and the Central Government broke down last weekend.
