The organizational meeting in November 1936 included representatives of the YWCA, Federal Council of Churches, American Jewish Congress, the New York branch of WILPF, the National Council for the Prevention of War, the National Student Federation, the Teachers Union, the National Negro Congress, and the Communist-led American League against War and Fascism (ALAWF).
This was true until 1937, when WILPF broke with ALAWF to work with a non-Communist organization, the isolationist Keep America Out of War Congress, which relied upon pacifist, labor, and socialist support rather than the Communist Party.
