It was not only capitalists and the state that combated the workers' struggle: the president of the American Federation of Labor (AFL), the country's largest union at the time, claimed that the
ANLC was fostering "race hatred" (Foner & Allen 1987, 116).

Several of the ABB members served the
ANLC in an administrative capacity, and, thus, the ABB came to an end sometime in 1925.
