The Architects (Registration) Act of 1931 and the Architects Registration Act of 1938 confine the use of the title of "architect" to persons on a register maintained by the Architects Registration Council of the United Kingdom (ARCUK).(24) This legislation does not prevent individuals from pracficing as architects but rather from calling themselves "architects" if they are not registered.
Advertising by the profession has traditionally been restricted by the ARCUK and the RIBA(29) but there was progressive relaxation of codes from the late 1970's.
