These are the flower stalks and seed heads of our native Arum maculatum, commonly known as Cuckoo Pint or Lords and Ladies.
The late winter and spring foliage display from our native Arum and others such as Arum italicum pictum and A.
The largest
Arums at the gardens weigh about 200lb (90kg) and can grow at a rate of quarter of an inch an hour.
The trait does show up in a few lineages of moderately recent origin, such as the
arums, the palms, and a related family sometimes called the Panama-hat palms.
One of the prettiest, the
arum lily, or zantedeschia, has lush foliage that is useful for creating a tropical feel.
