Because the certification is being provided through ASMI, a state corporation, it must be open and freely accessible to all who harvest and process Alaska seafood.
"In developing Alaska Seafood U, we wanted to address the retailers' need to keep up with consumers' growing demand for information about wild Alaska seafood," said Larry Andrews, ASMI retail marketing director.

"This is an exciting time of year for Alaska, as we anticipate the first salmon run of the summer," said Ray Riutta, ASMI executive director.
With its budget stretched so thin, the ASMI is concentrating on trade promotions.
Lack of proper safety precautions at some hotels, ports, banks and other facilities in Oman can put them at risk of catching fire, Al Asmi said, adding that fire cases increase during summer due to high temperatures.
"China is obviously thriving amidst a global downturn," said Joe Jacobson, director of ASMI's international marketing program.
ASMI supplies instructional and point-of-sale materials to retailers as the season heats up.
