On May 5, 2009 a national position paper "The Public Health Nurses' Role in Achieving Health Equity: Elementary Inequities in Health" was presented at the Association of State and Territorial Directors of Nursing (ASTDN) National Conference in Oklahoma City.
Fran Ahern Smith was one of six public health leaders (Wisconsin, New York, California, Massachusetts, New Jersey, and New Mexico) who made a commitment to write this paper at the 2006 Annual ASTDN conference that focused on health inequities.
Nurses treat people in their response to wellness, disease, or injury and do this through collaboration; the ONN would function similarly in a complementary role with agencies contributing to the development of the nation's health care agenda such as the Office of the Surgeon General, CDC, the Association of State and Territorial Directors of Nursing (ASTDN), and the 19 national nursing organizations that developed Nursing's Agenda for the Future.
