As the US invaded Afghanistan in late 2001, after bin Laden's spectacular 9/11 attacks in New York and Washington, Zarqawi fled to Iran at IRGC/QF's invitation accompanied by the most senior members of an Arab/Afghan gang called al-Tawhid wal-Jihad (ATWJ), which he had created in Afghanistan as a rival to bin Laden's Qaeda.
The Iranian invitation was conditional on both ATWJ and al-Qaeda agreeing to be trained by the IRGC/QF in order to fight the US and UK forces in Iraq after the March 2003 American-led invasion.
