Christine Feak, a graduate English for Academic Purposes (EAP) instructor at the University of Michigan's English Language Institute and co-author with John Swales of a popular graduate ESL textbook series (e.g., Swales and Feak), raised this very issue in her talk at the 2011 CCCC, "Academic Writing for Graduate Students: It's Not Just for International Students Any More." Feak's call for genre-based graduate writing courses for both native and non-native English speakers was motivated by her recent experiences with native English speaking graduate students requesting to enroll in her graduate ESL courses, as--like the students described earlier in this essay--they felt that they had nowhere else to go.
