There are many potential uses of active array radar in military systems:
A well-engineered active array radar will use commercial-off-the-shelf technologies, resulting in a progressive lowering of costs and higher performance.
Higher modularity will reduce development times and enable users to reconfigure active array radars to perform radically different tasks from those for which they were originally procured.
The active array radar is capable of true multimode operation, i.e., both search and track functions can be interleaved instantaneously.
It is possible for the active array radar to also provide the synthetic aperture function.
GaAs technology has clearly established itself as the viable technical solution for development of the active array radar -- the radar of the future.
Affordable T/R modules will then usher in the most sought-after radar development in 30 years -- the active array radar.
He is responsible for ITT's active array radar development and related new business thrusts.
A comparison of conventional and active array radars is illustrated in Figure 1.
The brassboard demonstrations of the Hughes/GE team include X-band T/R modules for an active array radar brassboard; receiver and transmitter modules for a Smart Target Activated Fire and Forget brassboard; low-noise and -power amplifier modules for the Single Channel Advanced Man Portable Terminal; and lownoise and -power amplifiers for the Ground Based Interceptor Communications System.
