"What we want to do at universities is encourage active and collaborative learning and make it easier for faculty to do," Finkelstein says.
The purpose of this study was to determine whether or not there were significant differences in the self-reported frequency of active and collaborative learning by radal/ethnic affiliation between students who have completed a developmental writing course and those that plan to take one.
This study contributes to the increasing research that explores how active and collaborative learning affects developmental writing students at community colleges.
Looking at student engagement and active and collaborative learning practices are critical components in helping developmental students succeed (McCleeney, 2007).
In particular, this study will focus on Kuh's model of Active and Collaborative Learning, which suggests that students who are "intensely involved" in these educational experiences and are able to apply that in various situations in a collaborative environment with other students will succeed (Kinzie, Kuh, Schuh, & Whitt, 2011).
This study looked at the differences between those two groups to see if active and collaborative learning techniques had any effect.
Chapter 4 entitled "Coffeehouse as Classroom: Examination of a New Style of Active Learning Environment," explores whether the "Collaboration cafe"--the newest experimental classroom in Indiana University featured like a cafe--can offer an active and collaborative learning environment.
Our findings suggest that students report higher levels of engagement and learning at institutions where faculty members use active and collaborative learning techniques, engage students in experiences, emphasize higher-order cognitive activities in the classroom, interact with students, challenge students academically, and value enriching educational experiences.
The survey focuses on engagement in the five areas of active and collaborative learning, student/faculty interaction, academic challenge, student effort, and support for learners.
The data comes from a survey of 237,000 first-year and senior students who are asked to rate five key areas: level of academic challenge, active and collaborative learning, student-faculty interaction, enriching educational experiences, and supportive campus environment.
The NSSE survey is based on 41 key questions in five benchmark areas: level of academic challenge; active and collaborative learning; student-faculty interaction; enriching educational experiences; and supportive campus environment.
(Jossey-Bass, 1993): (1) "Cognitive and affective outcomes are affected by institutional diversity policies and activities" and (2) "Enhancing institutional emphasis on diversity may increase retention rates." Further, data from the latest "National Survey of Student Engagement" (NSSE Institute, 2002) showed that students who experience diversity report high levels of engagement, more progress in personal and educational growth, more involvement in active and collaborative learning, and more satisfaction with their college experience.
