Over the past three years, Scalmalloy has been further developed, and can today be used for series production-scale manufacturing using 3D printing and Additive Layer Manufacturing (ALM) technologies.
The Centre for Additive Layer Manufacturing (CALM) at the University of Exeter is researching new high temperature, high performance polymers for ALM, looking at material structures and properties and how these can be developed, so they can be used appropriately with the technology.
He added, "Additive layer manufacturing technologies are becoming increasingly accessible, so this method could become a viable approach for manufacturing."
The wheels, bearings and axle are incorporated into the "growing" process, known as Additive Layer Manufacturing.
David Holmes, the forthright director of Military Air and Information (MAI) manufacturing operations at the defence giant, doesn't take kindly to the notion that engineering fell out of favour in the region: four generations of his family have been employed at the plant, and his son is working on additive layer manufacturing at BAE (see box on page 31).
The recent increase in the use of both additive layer manufacturing and UAVs (Unmanned Aerial Vehicles) has led to the availability of a number of 3D printed UAVs for a range of applications.
It used optical microscopy testing to assess the validity of its patented in-mould welding- which used WMG's additive layer manufacturing facilities to create prototypes for a revolutionary hand held razor, medical devices and load tested a new Step Stool project.
