The implantable miniature telescope is said to give patients a wider visual field than external telescopes currently in use for advanced macular degeneration (AMD).
The scientists found that people getting the heftiest dose of carotenoids in their diet had a 43 percent lower risk of advanced macular degeneration than people ingesting the least carotenoids.
Antioxidants found in fruits and vegetables may help treat and prevent vision loss associated with advanced macular degeneration, according to a groundbreaking study by the National Institutes of Health.
A: The first study found that the AREDS formulation--a combination of vitamin C, vitamin E, beta-carotene, zinc, and copper--reduced the risk of progressing to advanced macular degeneration in those who had intermediate AMD.
First, we found that people eating fish, which is a great source of omega-3 fatty acids, had a lower risk of intermediate and advanced macular degeneration. Eating fish just two times a week was sufficient to see that effect.
Early macular degeneration was diagnosed in 227 subjects, 153 had intermediate-stage disease, and advanced macular degeneration was observed in 68 participants.
Among subjects with the lowest combined antioxidant levels, sunlight exposure was significantly associated with elevated risk of developing advanced macular degeneration. Although the results did not establish that sunlight exposure causes age-related macular degeneration, researchers noted the findings did suggest that in order to safeguard visual health, "people in the general population should use [eye] protection and follow dietary recommendations for the key antioxidant nutrients."
Taking both supplements cut the odds that macular degeneration got worse by about 25 percent, but only in people who were at high risk for advanced macular degeneration when the study began.
"If they all took the AREDS supplements, it would prevent more than 300,000 cases of advanced macular degeneration during the next five years," says Ferris.
Until we know more, says Mares, only people with intermediate or advanced macular degeneration should take high-dose supplements.
"In AREDS, people who ate fish at least twice a week had a 50 percent lower risk of advanced macular degeneration compared to people who ate no fish," says Ferris.
* If you have advanced macular degeneration, take a mixture of vitamin C (500 mg), vitamin E (400 IU), and beta-carotene (25,000 IU), as well as zinc (80 mg) and copper (2 mg), either as part of your daily multi or in a separate supplement.
