FEMA reacted to Sandy by producing Advisory Base Flood Elevation
(ABFE) maps to better represent the new flood risks since many of the FIRMs for New Jersey and New York counties were based on 25-year old data and gravely miscalculated the impact of storm surges.
The measures follow the release of new data from the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), which published the first of two phases of updated Advisory Base Flood Elevation
maps on Monday.
