Las principales materias primas utilizadas en la produccion de alimentos balanceados para animales provienen del sector primario (maiz, sorgo, soya, yuca y aceite crudo de palma), y del sector secundario (harina de carne, harina de pescado, salvado, tortas de ajonjoli, afrecho de cereales, entre otros); ademas, el 90% de las materias primas son importadas y solo el 10% corresponden a la produccion nacional (DPC 2011).

Son escasos los reportes cientificos en Venezuela acerca de la determinacion de micotoxinas en alimentos balanceados para animales [18], reportandose con frecuencia detecciones de aflatoxinas, entre otras micotoxinas, con metodos inmunodiagnosticos en materias primas para la elaboracion de alimentos balanceados [11].
La UP es un aducto quimico nuevo en el mercado nacional viable como fuente de P en la alimentacion animal, con una concentracion aproximada de 18% de fosforo y 17% de nitrogeno, constituyendose en una de las alternativas para la sustitucion de los fosfatos importados usados en la elaboracion de alimentos balanceados para animales. Es conocido que los alimentos concentrados para aves y cerdos estan elaborados principalmente a base de cereales y oleaginosas [14].
En Venezuela existen las condiciones ambientales de temperatura y humedad favorables para el desarrollo de hongos y sus toxinas, lo cual unido a que muchos de los productos empleados en la elaboracion de alimentos balanceados para animales (maiz, algodon, sorgo) son susceptibles a la contaminacion por hongos toxigenicos, hacen de las micotoxinas un problema de gran importancia [2, 14, 15].
El mismo tomo un extraordinario auge a partir de 1974, ano en el cual su cultivo comenzo a crecer vertiginosamente y paso a convertirse en un grano que represento hasta 1989 la principal fuente de carbohidratos en los alimentos balanceados para animales (aves y cerdos).
