The central issue in my article "You Mean He Works for Us?" (May) was not to examine the various types of employment scenarios that exist; the intent was to set forth a solid background screening plan for companies that use an alternative work force, which includes PEOs.
Instead, these employees are part of an alternative work force that should be screened towards the prevention of liability against the co-employers (which remain the PEO and the company that contracts with the PEO.) As I understand it, PEOs promote the concept of co-employment with their client, thereby giving rise to the type of liability that I address in the article.
Tactics such as creative plant architecture and alternative work forces will give managers a "value edge" in dealing with the uncontrollable aspects of their business.
