The book was written and illustrated (by award-winning artist Brian Berley) with the blessing of the Professional Ski Instructors of America and the American Association of Snowboard Instructors. PSIA-AASI is the world's largest grass roots organization of more than 31,400 snowsports professionals who give people the gift of freedom, health, and the ability to enjoy a sport that will reward them for the rest of their life.
In 1997 the organization took action not by forming a separate association (more on the reasons for that later) but by simply creating a separate brand within PSIA, complete with its own name: the American Association of Snowboard Instructors. Within five years, AASI had 5,000 certified snowboard instructors, It may sound like an entirely separate association, and that's exactly how it was intended.
The American Association of Snowboard Instructors, Lakewood, Colorado, was created as a brand within the Professional Ski Instructors of America, Lakewood, Colorado, for the simple reason that snowboarders have historically considered themselves a separate breed from skiers.
