According to the "American Family Business Survey," conducted in 1997 by Arthur Andersen and Mass Mutual, 91.6% of the family-owned business leader respondents expected their businesses to be controlled by the same family or families within two years (adjusted to reflect current year).
A majority of the respondents to a recent Arthur Andersen/MassMutual American Family Business Survey indicated that 40% or more of a family's wealth is outside of the business; thus, a large portion of the country's business owners apparently fail (or nearly fail) this requirement.
