This exhibition in the Antiguo Colegio de San Ildefonso in Mexico City's Centro Historico, a beautiful setting with some 20,000 square meters given over to Gaudi, displays sketches, photos, videos, drafts, reproductions, ceramics and furniture, from or based on the architect's work.
Some 670 blocks in all, the area contains one-fourth of Mexico City's hotels, one-third of the city's restaurants, more than fifteen hundred historic monuments, and four major museums, including the Antiguo Colegio de San Ildefonso, where the spectacular Los Mayas, the largest exhibition of Maya art ever mounted, 540 pieces, runs until December 31.
In a note to "Nocturno de San Ildefonso," Paz makes the following historical observation: "La Escuela Nacional Preparatoria ocupa el antiguo colegio de San Ildefonso, construido por los jesuitas a mediados del siglo XVII y expropiado por el gobierno liberal en el siglo XIX." Successively at different moments in the history of Mexico, the college of San Ildefonso played an important role in the cultural history of the country.
