Estimates of the relative risk reduction in mortality provided by the various classes of secondary prevention agents were obtained through analyses of the Heart Outcomes Prevention Evaluation study, the Long-Term Intervention with Pravastatin in Ischemic Disease trial, an overview provided by the Antiplatelet Trialists' Collaboration, and a large review of [beta]-blocker trials.
The Antiplatelet Trialist Collaboration reviewed 9,000 randomised patients and showed that aspirin substantially reduced the incidence of both DVT and PE in a wide range of surgical patients (Antiplatelet Trialists' Collaboration 1994).
