The Ascent Stage
was just the crew cabin, with a small engine and manoeuvring thrusters.
After 21 hours, 36 minutes on the lunar surface, the ascent stage
blasted off, leaving only the foil-wrapped structure of their lander.

In fact, NASA's Lunar Orbiters were designed to impact on command, as were several of the ascent stages
of the Apollo lunar modules.
