In his book, "Driven to Distraction at Work," Edward Hallowell delves into a phenomenon he calls attention deficit trait that has becoming increasingly common in the workplace.
These distractions are all part of what he calls Attention Deficit Trait (ADT), or "a severe case of modern life."
It contains 14 essays first presented in the publication from 2005 to 2012 that address stress and using it productively; why smart people underperform due to the attention deficit trait and how to manage it; how to manage energy and not time; why great performers sleep more; how to improve the work/life balance by understanding limits and making trade-offs, making time off required, deciding on a flexible work schedule, managing a two-career relationship, and leaving a bad day at work; and specific tools, like developing habits of happiness, changing one's relationship with stress, performing desk yoga, and integrating non-work activities.
Media multitasking has spawned a new condition called attention deficit trait, whose symptoms are similar to those of attention deficit disorder, according to a Massachusetts psychiatrist.
Hallowell said that workers who reflexively check and respond to each e-mail that drops into their inbox--thus failing to stay focused on a single work-related task--suffer from Attention Deficit Trait (ADT).
