Techniques which have been transformed with the use of synchrotron radiation include: X-ray absorption spectroscopies such as Extended X-ray Absorption Fine Structure (EXAFS) and Near-edge X-ray Absorption Fine Structure (NEXAFS) of solids (crystalline or amorphous), liquids and solution, gases, surfaces, and interfaces; Photoelectron and Auger spectroscopy of gases, solids and surfaces; X-ray diffraction (XRD) of solids (powders, single crystals, non-crystalline materials) including small angle X-ray scattering (SAXS) from polymers, composites, and biological materials.
Saldin and others rely on photoelectron and Auger spectroscopy data to reconstruct three-dimensional images (SN: 9/1/90, p.134).
Figure 2 shows the results of Auger spectroscopy examination in the form of graphs of the concentration of elements in the thickness of the initial and deformed specimens.
Information provided by HREELS is complementary to the compositional information provided by Auger spectroscopy and SIMS and the insights into electronic structure offered by XPS and UPS.
The researchers say their tecnique is powerful enough to handle diffraction data produced by a variety of methods currently used by scientists to probe the nature of surfaces, including photelectron nd Auger spectroscopy.
