Praising the effort of the researchers of the study, Niederhuth said that the authors executed an extraordinary additional progress and altered the normal pattern of BBM1 expression by turning on the mother's copy of the gene before fertilisation from the father occured.
He added that by combining the BBM1 expression method with this MiMe method, the authors showed that in some cases they could skip normal sexual reproduction and instead reproduce rice asexually.
The technique could be applied in other cereal crops which have equivalent BBM1 genes, and in other crop plants.
