In The Faerie Queene (1590, 1596), Spenser "brings him in with his palmer through the cave of Mammon, and the bowr of earthly blisse that he might see and know, and yet abstain." It is significant that Milton has cited a character devoted to a "classical" virtue, temperance, governed by reason, as are justice and continence, which he also emphasizes in this part of his argument.
