Today no-one would dare perform these lovely works on anything larger than a compact period-instrument band, and this new release by the Bach Collegium Japan under the spirited, genial direction of harpsichordist Masaaki Suzuki (who resembled a kamikaze version of Ex Cathedra's Jeffrey Skidmore when I saw him perform in Stratford a couple of years ago) offers immense pleasure, its scholarship worn lightly - unlike an earnest account of the Third Suite I heard decades ago in Birmingham which crumbled under the weight of its ostentatious "correctness".
Might not he--or, indeed, Masaaki Suzuki's excellent Bach Collegium Japan, whose choral singing is understandably based on current European models--now be persuaded (but by whom?
