Abstract--We assessed the utility of an alternative method of video analysis for generating data for sharks and compared observations of sharks from the use of baited remote underwater video stations (BRUVS) with observations made by scuba divers during surveys conducted simultaneously with BRUVS video recordings.
Table 1 Comparison of observations of shark species between 2 methods used: 1) underwater visual census conducted by scuba divers and 2) analysis of videos taken with baited remote underwater video stations. This comparison includes only observations from the 5 sites at which sharks were detected by divers.
A study by the Australian Institute of Marine Science (AIMS), using Baited Remote Underwater Video Stations (BRUVS), suggests severe over-fishing is behind a rapid decline in dwindling shark populations in parts of northern Australia.

Although numerous underwater video approaches and techniques have been used to index abundance, many researchers now employ some version of a stationary point-count method with baited remote underwater video stations (BRUVS) (Willis et al., 2000; Cappo et al., 2004).
