"It's a larger portion of the effects world than it would seem," says visual effects supervisor Van Ling, president of Banned from the Ranch, a digital effects house in Los Angeles.
"A lot of these invisible effects are there to allow the film-makers to make the set safer or more comfortable," says Ling, of Banned from the Ranch. In pre-digital days, the wires and rigs that suspended actors in mid-air scenes needed to be as thin as possible to make their optical removal easier.
