For Gobineau, Bay St. George was what he called an Irish utopia.
He heard of the fishery in Bay St. George. He packed his bags, which weren't heavy, and came, and by an unbelievable good fortune, he at last found his true vocation: a kind of toil that spoke to the imagination, nothing that called for a mechanical regularity, and above all the absence of alcoholic temptations he did not know how to resist.
George's book, based on an examination of women's activism in one region of Newfoundland, the Bay St. George located on the province's west coast, contributes to this latter scholarship that has sought to give Newfoundland women an opportunity to speak about the problems they confront in their everyday lives and to develop locally-meaningful strategies to better their situation and that of their children.
While in many ways the Bay St. George was a distant "field" within which this anthropologist could objectively examine women's lives, in George's case at least the separation was not so easy.
Chapter 2 gives the historical background of the study, situating the town of Stephenville as the post-WW1 1 employment and later service centre of the Bay St. George region, a place where gender, religion, ethnicity and labour power are tightly interwoven into a stratification system that located women, particularly those from rural, Francophone and Catholic backgrounds, at or near the bottom.
