In the figure, 0[degrees] represents "one, one"; 90[degrees] represents "one, zero"; 180[degrees] represents "zero, one"; and 270[degrees] represents "zero, zero." Each of the periods during which a signal phase is transmitted is called a "baud." In the earlier examples, one "bit" (of the digital data) was carried by one "baud." In QPSK signals, there are two bits per baud. There are also more complex phase modulations in which there are many defined phases, so there can be more bits carried per baud.
