Ulysses, infuriated by the death of his comrade, hit him with his spear on one temple, and the bronze point came through on the other side of his forehead.
He was coming down his pasture in the forest to drink of the river, for the heat of the sun drove him, and as he passed I struck him in the middle of the back; the bronze point of the spear went clean through him, and he lay groaning in the dust until the life went out of him.
He is correct when referring to polymertipped bullets, but I'm fairly sure that the original tipped bullet was the Remington Bronze Point sometime in the 1950s.
I couldn't imagine that the Bronze Point was an expanding bullet.
BRONZE Point Special--Stevens Point Brewery Co., Stevens Point, WI
This notion first appeared with the metal-tipped bullets like the Remington Bronze point, but high-speed digital photography showed the plastic tip normally drifted away from the bullet after impact.
Eventually new designs and materials produced dependable .30-06 game bullets: the Remington Bronze Point, Peters Protected Point, Western Open-Point Expanding--later the Winchester Silvertip and Power-Point, Remington Core-Lokt and Federal Hi-Shok.
For those not yet familiar with this latest development from the Beaverton, Oregon bullet makers, it could be described as a 1980s version of Remington's Bronze Point. The idea of using a hard material to form the nose of a bullet rather than simply having a small tip of the lead core exposed is nothing new; it's been the object of experimentation ever since the jacketed bullet appeared in the mid-1870s.
While in part it was a material variation on Remington's earlier Bronze Point, the Nosier Ballistic Tip brought a whole new dimension to hunting bullets--from varmints to big game--and the shiny slugs really stirred hunters' interest when they were introduced.
Remington introduced their famous Bronze Point, a true hollowpointed soft point, capped with a bronze wedge that initiated core expansion upon contact -- a concept that is more often seen today in the Nosler Ballistic Tip, Hornady A-Max and V-Max, and the Swift Scirocco.
In the Express line, there are the Core-Lokt and Bronze Point.
