CALPI) set up to promote regional investment by private businessmen revealed in October 1999 that of the more than 13,000 investment projects registered with it since 1994, less than 4 percent were operational.(37) By February 2001, Algeria had only three companies listed on its stock exchange -- and they were all public enterprises.
Regional investment promotion agencies (Comites d'Assistance a la Localisation et la Promotion des Investissements,
CALPI) to help investors obtain land and to facilitate their dealings with the local authorities have also been set up.
