In the amphicarpic plants Gymnarrhena micrantha (Koller & Roth, 1964) and Emex spinosa (L.) Campd. (Polygonaceae) (Evenari et al., 1977), the subterranean achenes and propagules do not disperse; they remain protected by the woody, dry covers of the dead mother plants where they mature until they germinate in situ (Zohary, 1937).
