T HE Central Board of Direct Taxes ( CBDT) has fixed August 31 as the deadline for taxpayers whose income tax returns ( ITRs) for six assessment years between 2009- 10 and 2014- 15 are pending for processing and issuing of refund on account of issues related to non- filing of the ITR- V acknowledgement form at its Central Processing Centre in Bengaluru.
The ex-servicemen have approached the apex court against a Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT) circular stating that disability pension of those veterans who have not been invalidated out of forces due to the injuries would be taxed.
As part of its efforts to widen and deepen the taxpayer base in the country, the CBDT has given a target to the income tax department to add 1.25 crore new people by end of the current fiscal, the official said.
"The CBDT had in a press statement on August 7 released the very same numbers and what the Prime Minister said in his independence day speech was exactly in line with that," he said.
CBDT, in the same order, also extended the time limit for depositing tax deducted at source ( TDS) on transfer of immovable property from 7 days to 30 days.
"Evidence detected so far reveals undisclosed cash dealings of huge amounts in immovable property transactions, construction, etc," CBDT further said in the press release.
The CBDT extends the due date' for filing of ITRs as well as reports of Audit (which were required to be filed by the said specified date) from September 30, 2018 to October 15, 2018 in respect of the said categories of taxpayers, the CBDT said in a statement.
An official said that the CBDT saw that in many cases when the issue raised by the taxpayer is found to be correct, the application is not replied to and allowed to lapse.
The Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT), in its circular issued last month, had stated that "income tax exemption" would continue to be available for all Army, Navy and IAF personnel who have been "invalidated out of service on account of bodily disability attributable to or aggravated by such service".
