For various reasons, indicated in our book, our own CBEL entry is likely to be shorter than the one by Maximilian Novak in the New Cambridge Bibliography of English Literature of 1971--perhaps drastically so.
It will not be possible, in the format of the CBEL itself, to give our reasons for including particular items and excluding others (some of them perhaps very familiar ones).
Trent included both the Walpole tract and The Defection Farther Consider'd in the list appended to his account of Defoe in the Cambridge History of English Literature in 1912, and they reappeared in the Defoe entry in the CBEL (1940) compiled by H.
