We used a panel of eight NPs (Ce[O.sub.2]NP, Ti[O.sub.2]NP, CBNP, Si[O.sub.2]NP, NiONP, ZnONP, CuONP, and Beads) purchased from commercial sources, as noted in Table 1.
Ti[O.sub.2]NP, Si[O.sub.2]NP, and Beads produced no detectable inflammation in the lung, whereas CBNP treatment was associated with mild perivascular neutrophilic inflammation.
LLNL researchers have won several R&D Magazine R&D 100 Awards for the biological and chemical monitoring systems they created for the CBNP. Their Biological Aerosol Sentry and Information System (BASIS) won an award in 2003 and their Autonomous Pathogen Detection System (APDS), outlined on page 25, won an award in 2004.
