As the Egyptian writer and economist, Mahmoud Abdel Fadil, told the CEDEJ conference: "The dominant impulse for many Arab countries to seek closer economic integration would be to attract capital and modern technology rather than to derive the benefits from freer trade.
The talk focused on Egyptian foreign policy in the context of globalization, and was one of a series of lectures and conferences CEDEJ will host this year.
Following the talk, Pommier answered questions from members of the audience, including students and CEDEJ staff.
The CEDEJ opened in Cairo in 1968, as part of the Franco-Egyptian cultural agreement, and is devoted to promoting research in the social sciences.
"The mission of the center is the training of students - both Egyptian and French, and more broadly from Europe and the Arab world - in the field of human social sciences," said CEDEJ Director Marc Lavergne.
CEDEJ is funded by the French National Council for Scientific Research and the French Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
Graduate students and those who have recently obtained a doctoral degree - both from Egypt and abroad - can qualify for scholarships to participate in CEDEJ research.
