While historical data are sparse, today humpback whales occur regularly in the Gulf of Maine from April through October (Clapham and Mayo, 1987; Baraff and Weinrich, 1993; Clapham et al., 1993; CETAP (1)), and feeding aggregations have been observed as late as December in some years (Geraci et al., 1989; Robbins, personal observ.).
Fin whales are also present in the Gulf of Maine from spring to late fall but are largely absent in the winter (Seipt et al., 1990; Hain et al., 1992; CETAP (1)).

The physiography of the northwestern Atlantic Ocean is much more like that found in the northern Gulf of Mexico and the CETAP
study (Hain et al., 1985; Kenney and Winn, 1986; CETAP(5)) found Risso's dolphins concentrated at the shelf break (mode of 478 sightings was 183 m depth) and distributed over the entire continental slope (average of 478 sightings was 1092 m).
