CETH will take a leading role in formulating effective methodologies for developing, maintaining, and using electronic texts created by individual scholars or projects.
The only attempt to create a systematic catalog using standard bibliographic procedures is the Rutgers Inventory of Machine-Readable Texts in the Humanities, which has now been taken over by CETH. Established in 1983, the Inventory is held on the Research Libraries Information Network (RLIN).
CETH is also firmly committed to the use of a standard encoding format for electronic texts and is adopting the Text Encoding Initiative (TEI) guidelines in full.
CETH's acquisitions policy is to concentrate on a number of focussed collections of material that are encoded and documented in TEI SGML and which represent good scholarly editions.
CETH is looking too better facilities than are currently provided by FTP and Listserv.
They will use the Inventory as a first means of access and move seamlessly from that to the CETH Text Collection or to other collections.
Research done at CETH indicates that there is little expertise in the specific problems of cataloging electronic texts.
