The Routine AAF Clouds Optical Radiative Observations (RACORO) operated for over 5 months, from 22 January to 30 June 2009, over the SGP with the CIRPAS Twin Otter logging 260 research hours during 59 flights.
The events took place at the US Naval Postgraduate School's Center for Interdisciplinary Remotely-Piloted Aircraft Studies (Cirpas).
Flight operations were under the direct control of the Navy's Center for Interdisciplinary Remotely Piloted Aircraft Studies (CIRPAS) group, while General Atomics Aeronautical Systems (San Diego, CA) provided flight and maintenance crews to operate the two UAVs.
They were demonstrated on digital images collected by a surrogate TUAV (the modified Cessna 01-A called the Pelican that is flown by the Naval Postgraduate School's Center for Interdisciplinary Remotely Piloted Aircraft Studies, or CIRPAS) carrying the AROSS imaging system mentioned previously (see Figure 6).
