The cartel led by Yepes Ramirez is reportedly fighting CJNG
, the Zetas, and the Gulf Cartel for control of fuel-theft operations in a corridor in central Guanajuato that includes the PEMEX refinery in Salamanca and the storage and distribution terminal in Irapuato, as well as operations in the communities of Silao and Penjamo.
In recent years, the CJNG
has become one of the most powerful Mexican drug gangs, and authorities blame it for violence that has convulsed much of central and western Mexico.
Last year, a DEA drug-threat report called CJNG
"one of the most powerful and fastest growing (cartels) in Mexico and the United States." It said the cartel's primary product is methamphetamine, with main U.S.
A number of criminal groups, some affiliated with the Zetas, the Cartel Jalisco Nueva Generacion (CJNG
), and others (SourceMex, March 15, 2017), are leading the fuel-theft operations.
