Integrative, Instrumental Motivation and UCOCP were positively while the CLMIS was negatively related to self-rated competence in listening, speaking, reading, writing and overall Chinese.
To explore the predictors for self-rated competence in Chinese, multiple regression analyses were conducted in the study, with Integrative Motivation, Instrumental Motivation, the CLMIS and UCOCP being independent variables and each of the five self-ratings in Chinese competence being the dependent variable, respectively.
Nevertheless, compared with Integrative and Instrumental Motivation, the reported motivation intensity was not high, as the mean CLMIS score was only 25.32 and the mean score of only one CLMIS item exceeded 4 (mean = 4.14) in the present study.
