The next section provides a brief sketch of the history of the CMEA in so far as it is relevant to structural change, i.e.
In early January 1949, an article in Pravda reported the establishment of the CMEA. Its founding members were the Soviet Union, Bulgaria, Czechoslovakia, Hungary, Poland, and Romania.
In contrast to other economic confederations the CMEA was unique in its structure, consisting as it did of one superpower and several small countries at very diverse levels of economic development.
Should I be successful in my bid to join the CMEA board as a Member-at-Large, I will work collaboratively with the CMEA executive team to identify the focus and direct and work diligently to carry out its goals.
It is my hope that the leadership skills I bring to the CMEA, along with the discipline I will apply in my position, will strengthen the association and continue to advance the important and valuable work already being undertaken by the executive team.
I have been serving on the CMEA Elected Board since July of 2008 as a Member-at-Large in charge of the electronic newsletter and, more recently as the Membership Coordinator.
I felt that the only way to convince my colleagues of CMEA's relevance was to write a balanced and topical article for the journal for over four years, travel to every province and major city (many trips for some of these), speak at most major Universities and provincial conferences and create partnerships with the National Art Centre and the Cultural Branch of the Federal Government.
An Honorary Member of CMEA! I find it hard to believe how fast the time has gone since I received that conference call many years ago from Dennis Tupman and Joan Therens insisting that I should let my name stand for Vice President.
I have made many friends across Canada through CMEA and across the world through ISME.
CMEA has had a proud history of advocacy for Canadian music in education and support for research leading to the development of Canadian music resource materials for teachers.
I am stepping down from my CMEA Canadian music in education responsibilities as I begin my retirement, but I am pleased to report that the CMEA board has appointed an advisory committee to consider future directions for CMEA's CanMus work.
