The chemical composition of the 'ravine soil', according to chemical analysis, was as follows: K 0.30 cmol [dm.sub.-3], Ca 2.91 cmol [dm.sup.-3], Mg 0.85 cmol dm-3, Al 0.12 cmol [dm.sup.-3], H 5.19 cmol [dm.sup.-3], CEC 9.43 cmol [dm.sup.-3], organic matter 13.39 g [dm.sup.-3], N 0.67 g dm-3, P 2.36 mg [dm.sup.-3], pH 4.87 and base saturation 43.72%.
It had an available P content of 9.8 ppm and an exchangeable K content of 0.35 cmol [kg.sup.-1] (Table 1).
Also, the Mg concentration in this field was high at 1.08 cmol [kg.sup.-1] which could explain the high contribution of Mg distribution to crop yield variation.
