Designed to address the problems of multiple communications systems that became evident in the response to the 9-11 attacks, the CMWN will connect first responders to one another and to other agencies, enabling the transfer of files such as fingerprints, city maps, and streaming video, as well as access to anti-crime and antiterrorism databases.
In addition, CMWN will support nonemergency applications such as water meter reading, detection of potential water leaks, and remote monitoring and programming of traffic signals.
CMWN is expected to become operable in parts of the city this month and citywide by the spring of 2008.
