In a speech during the Philippine Aviation Summit yesterday, Transportation Secretary Joseph Emilio Abaya announced that the satellite-based CNS-ATM will be finally installed and operational, six years after the project was originally awarded.
While installation of the CNS-ATM system is ongoing, the Civil Aviation Authority of the Philippines (CAAP) is using the upgraded Eurocat air traffic management system.
The CNS-ATM system works by having aircraft transponders receive satellite signals and using transponder transmissions to determine the precise locations of aircraft in the sky.
Originally priced at P10 billion, the CNS-ATM was awarded in December 2010 but the Commission on Audit disallowed the project in May 2011.
