All West Virginia medical schools require successful completion of either the USMLE Step 1 (MD programs) or COMLEX 1 (DO programs) prior to being promoted to year 3 of their medical education.
The USMLE Step 1 and COMLEX 1 exams are the first part of medical licensing examination series in the US.
The AOA also differs with the Federation of State Medical Boards over the use of COMLEX.
At its meeting last April, the House of Delegates of the Federation of State Medical Boards agreed to conduct a comparison of USMLE and COMLEX and to report the findings at the Federation's annual meeting in April 1999.
