The CQC said the dignity of patients had also been compromised, with one patient's abdominal area uncovered throughout the visiting period whilst they were asleep in the chair.
Responding to the report, Estephanie Dunn, Royal College of Nursing Northern region operational manager, said: "The report makes clear that both patients and the CQC believe that the vast majority of staff are delivering high quality care.
"But the CQC also raised some serious concerns about the quality of the service provided by a minority of staff.
"Clearly it's not acceptable when all of the patients who the CQC speak to, can cite instances when staff had not been respectful.
South Tyneside NHS Foundation Trust has highlighted concerns to the CQC regarding its overall assessment which the Trust believes to be wrong and "out of context" with the findings which were by and large positive throughout.
